प्रस्तुत पाठ में दाँतों की साफ़-सफ़ाई का महत्व बताया गया है। हमें अपने दाँत साफ़ रखने चाहिए। स्वस्थ रहने के लिए दाँतों का साफ़ होना जरूरी है। आइए, पाठ पढ़कर जानें।

अलीशा के मोती उठो अलीशा, जल्दी करो। देर हो रही है। स्कूल बस आने में केवल एक घंटा ब है।” माँ ने अलीशा को जगाते हुए कहा। “अभी उठती हूँ माँ।” कहकर अलीशा दु सो गई। माँ खाना बनाने में व्यस्त हो गईं। इधर अलीशा निश्चिंत होकर सोती रही।

जब माँ वापस कमरे में आई, तो अलीशा अभी भी सो रही थी। माँ को बहुत आया। बस आने में केवल दस मिनट बाकी थे। उन्होंने अलीशा को जैसे-तैसे उठा और बाथरूम में ले गईं।

“लो अलीशा, ब्रश कर लो।” माँ ने उसके हाथ में ब्रश थमाते हुए कहा।

“माँ, अभी मेरे पास टाइम नहीं है। वैसे भी रोज़ रोज़ ब्रश करने की कोई ज़रूरत न है।” कहते हुए अलीशा ने ब्रश वहीं रख दिया। वह बिना नहाए सिर्फ़ मुँह-हाथ घ बाहर आ गई। माँ को गुस्सा तो बहुत आ रहा था, पर इस समय वे चुप ही रहीं। अलं ने खाने का पहला कौर तोड़ा ही था कि स्कूल बस का हॉर्न सुनाई दिया। वह थोड़ा-खाना मुँह में ठूंसकर स्कूल के लिए…
लगाते हुए पूछा। अलीशा ने माँ को बताया कि उसके दाँतों में दर्द है। माँ ने उसे चुप कराया और दंत चिकित्सक के पास ले गई।

अलीशा के दाँत देखते ही डॉक्टर ने अलीशा से कहा, “तुम्हारे दाँतों में तो कीड़े लगे हैं। दर्द तो होगा ही।” “कीडे ! डॉक्टर साहब कुछ कीजिए। मुझे बहुत दर्द हो रहा है।”

यह कहकर अलीशा रोने लगी। डॉक्टर ने कहा, “मैं अभी तो तुम्हें दवाई दे देता हैं। अभी तो तुम्हारा दर्द बंद हो जाएगा। पर यदि तुम प्रतिदिन दो बार अपने दाँत साफ़ नहीं करोगी तो तुम्हारे सारे दाँतों में कीड़े लग जाएँगे।”

माँ ने अलीशा को समझाते हुए कहा, “देखो अलीशा, जब हम अपने दाँत साफ़ नहीं करते, तो हमारे मुँह में जो भी गंदगी होती है। वह दाँतों से चिपक जाती है और दाँत सड़ने लगते हैं। इतना ही नहीं, खाना खाते समय वही गंदगी हमारे पेट में चली जाती है और हम बीमार पड़ जाते हैं। बताओ, तुम बीमार रहना …

जादू का ग्रह

आज अलीशा बहुत खुश है। बार-बार दरवाजे पर जाकर, वह अपने पापा की राह देख रही है। वह पापा के साथ शाम को ‘कोई मिल गया’ फ़िल्म देखने वाली है। “मम्मी, पापा कब आएँगे?” अलीशा ने उत्सुकता से पूछा।

PANDORA’S BOX

A myth or legend is a story from ancient times.

It is mostly a story related to gods and goddesses.

For example, we have many myths related to Rama, Shiva, Ganga, Durga, Kali, Indra, Agni and others.

Here you’ll read a very popular Greek myth. It tells how things like grief, misery and hope came to live with man on this earth.

It is a story of long time ago. The world was new at that time. Gods and men lived together on the earth. There was no pain and no sorrow. Everyone lived a happy life.

In those days, there was one named Epimetheus in Greece. He lived happily with his beautiful wife, Pandora.

One day they saw god Hermes coming towards them. He was carrying a large, ornate, wooden box. It seemed very heavy.

What’s in that box of yours?” asked Pandora.

“I can’t tell you,” replied Hermes, “but may I leave it here for a few days? I’m going on a journey.”

“Of course,” said Epimetheus. “It will be safe in our house.”

Hermes thanked the couple and put the box in a corner. But he warned them not to open it. He said, “Whatever happens, do not open the box !”

“We won’t!” promised both Epimetheus and Pandora. Hermes left the box there and set off on his journey.

Now Pandora longed to know what was in the box. Day after day she looked at the box with curious eyes. She tried to guess what might be inside the box. Could there be gleaming gold coins or sparkling jewels? Could there be bottles of sweet-smelling perfume or fine silken clothes? Pandora’s curiosity kept growing every minute.

Finally she could bear the suspense no longer. “What harm is there if I take just one little peep³?” she said to herself. Then she untied the gold Cord around the box and began to lift the lid slowly.

Don’t do that!” shouted Epimetheus, who had just come into the room. But it was too late. The lid was already open!

Pandora gasped in surprise. There was no gold or jewels or perfume or silk inside the box. There was just a swarm of little winged monsters!

Among those monsters, there were all the unpleasant things of the world- disease, pain, sorrow, suffering, envy, anger, revenge and many others. God Hermes had kept them trapped in his box, but now they were free to afflict the world.

Pandora slammed the lid shut’. For the first time in her life, she felt pain and sorrow. Epimetheus, too, had a new feeling. For the first time in his life, he was in bad temper³.

“You shouldn’t have opened the box!” he shouted.

“Don’t shout at me,” cried Pandora. “I’m sure you yourself would have opened it if I hadn’t.”

The husband and wife began to shout and quarrel. Outside their house they heard noises they had never heard before. Other people were also quarrelling.

“Oh, what have I done!” said Pandora in tears.

“Who are you?” asked Pandora.

“I’m Hope the fairy of Hope,” said the creature.

“I can help you and all others in the world to bear the sorrows you have just let out.”

The fairy of Hope healed all the hurts of Pandora and Epimetheus. T she went out into the world to do the same for all mankind.

क्या आपने भारत की महिला गणितज्ञ लीलावती का नाम सुना है? उनके बारे में कहा जाता है कि वे पेड़ के पत्ते तक गिन लेती थीं। आपको यह जानकर हैरानी होगी कि आज यूरोप सहित विश्व के अनेक देशों में गणित की जो पुस्तक पढ़ाई जाती है, उसकी रचयिता लीलावती ही हैं।

लीलावती, दक्षिण भारत के महान गणितज्ञ और खगोल विद्या के बहुत बड़े पंडित की एकमात्र पुत्री थीं। विवाह के कुछ समय बाद ही वे विधवा हो गई। पिता ने बेटी का दुख भुलाने के लिए उन्हें गणित पढ़ाना आरंभ किया। लीलावती ने भी पूरी लगन से गणित पढ़ना शुरू कर दिया। गणित में उनका मन इतना रमा कि वे धीरे-धीरे अपना दुख भूल गई।

लीलावती ने गणित के कई महान ग्रंथों की रचना की और गणित-संबंधी लेखन कार्यों में अपने पिता की सहायता भी की। उनके पिता ने ‘सिद्धांतशिरोमणि’ नामक ग्रंथ की रचना की जिसके एक भाग का नाम उन्होंने ‘लीलावती’ रखा।

‘लीलावती’ अंकगणित (Arithmetic) की एक महान पुस्तक है। इसका अधिकांश भाग लीलावती ने ही लिखा है। इसमें बीजगणित (Algebra) और क्षेत्रमिति (Mensuration) की भी जानकारी दी गई है। अकबर के दरबार के विद्वान फ़ैजी ने सन 1587 में ‘लीलावती’ का फ़ारसी भाषा में अनुवाद किया। ‘लीलावती’ का अंग्रेज़ी भाषा में अनुवाद जे० वेलर ने सन 1716 में किया।

भास्कराचार्य ने अपनी बेटी को गणित सिखाने के लिए ऐसे सूत्र बनाए जो काव्य में रचे गए थे। इन सूत्रों का उपयोग करके गणित के प्रश्न हल किए जाते थे। इन सूत्रों की शुरुआत “हिरन जैसे नयनों वाली प्यारी बिटिया लीलावती, ये जो सुत्र हैं…” जैसे शब्दों से की गई है। अपनी बेटी को पढाने के लिए उन्होंने इसी शैली का उपयोग किया।

कुछ समय पहले तक भारत में भी गणित को दोहों में पढ़ाया जाता था। जैसे पंद्रह का पहाड़ा इस प्रकार पढ़ा जाता था- दूनी तीस, तिया पैंतालीस, चौके साठ, छक्के नब्बे… अट्ठे बीसा, नौ पैंतीस…।

इसी तरह कैलेंडर याद करवाने का सूत्र था, “सि अप जूनो तीस के, बाकी के इकतीस, अट्ठाईस की फरवरी, चौथे सन उनतीस!”

इस तरह ‘लीलावती’ में गणित को बड़े ही रोचक, मनोरंजक और जिज्ञासा के साथ समझाया गया है। अपने पिता से सीखने के बाद लीलावती भी एक महान गणितज्ञ एवं खगोलशास्त्री के रूप में जानी गईं।

लीलावती ने सिद्ध कर दिया कि अगर लगन सच्ची हो, तो सफलता अवश्य मिलती है। धन्य हैं लीलावती के पिता जिन्होंने अपनी पुत्री को दुख से उबारकर उनके जीवन को एक नई दिशा दी।

भारत सरकार ने लीलावती को सम्मान देते हुए उनके नाम से ‘लीलावती पुरस्कार’ की शुरुआत की। ‘लीलावती पुरस्कार’ उन गणितज्ञों को दिया जाता है, जो गणित के प्रचार-प्रसार के क्षेत्र में काम करते हैं।

“Yes, my son, you can keep this poor little puppy here.”

“What shall we call it, Mother?” asked Mary.

“We shall call it Lucky because it was lucky that you rescued it,” said the mother.

So everybody in the house called it Lucky. Jack and Mary took great can of it. They washed and brushed it daily, and fed it nicely. In the course of time, it grew into a big and strong dog. He loved Jack and Mary mon than anybody else. He loved to be with them always. The two children often took him out for long walks.

One day the three of them went for a walk by the lake. Lucky saw a rabbit in the fields. He tore off¹2 after this rabbit, leaving the two children alone. And then a dreadful thing happened !

Mary was walking just on the edge of the lake. Suddenly her foot slipped and over she went, right into the deep blue water !

Jack was frightened. Mary couldn’t swim, and neither could he. He couldn’t reach her, for the bank was high above the water. No one was about. What was he to do?

Mary would certainly drown if he didn’t do something! Then he suddenly thought of Lucky.

“Lucky! Lucky!” he shouted. it

Lucky came running in an instant. He saw poor Mary struggling in the water below. Splash! In he jumped and swam to her. He caught hold of her dress in his strong teeth. Then he swam back to the bank, dragging Mary after him.

He found a place where the bank was low, and Jack helped to drag Mary out.

She was gasping, but in a few minutes she was all right again. “Oh, Lucky!” she said, hugging him hard. “You have saved my life

Lucky wagged his tail with love. Then they all ran back home to Mother. Jack told Mother all that had happened.

“You rescued him when he was a puppy,” said Mother, “and now he has paid you back. Hurrah for good Lucky !”

And she gave Lucky three big chocolate biscuits as a token of thanks.
