THE STORY OF LUCKY

Animals are our friends. They help us in many ways. They give us many things. Can you tell how these animals help us ?

One day Mary and Jack were walking home from school. Near the marketplace, they saw a crowd of children watching something. They ran up to see what it was.

“Oh, Mary!” said Jack in a tone of pity. “Those three boys in the middle have got a young puppy, and they are teasing it. One of them is pulling it by the tail. Isn’t that a shame? The poor little thing is terribly frightened.”

“Oh! No one seems to be doing anything about it,” said Mary. “Come on, Jack, we’ll rescue it.”

“Don’t be cruel,” said Jack bravely to the three boys. “Leave the poor puppy alone. If it belongs to no one, I’ll take it home. It’s a shame to tease a little thing like that.”

Mary caught hold of the puppy and gave it to Jack. One of the boys tried to push Jack over, but when Jack looked at him fiercely, he ran awa Jack and Mary took the puppy home and told their mother all about i “Mother, no one owns this puppy,” said Jack. “May we keep it?”

“Yes, my son, you can keep this poor little puppy here.”

“What shall we call it, Mother?” asked Mary.

“We shall call it Lucky because it was lucky that you rescued it,” said the mother.

So everybody in the house called it Lucky. Jack and Mary took great can of it. They washed and brushed it daily, and fed it nicely. In the course of time, it grew into a big and strong dog. He loved Jack and Mary mon than anybody else. He loved to be with them always. The two children often took him out for long walks.

One day the three of them went for a walk by the lake. Lucky saw a rabbit in the fields. He tore off¹2 after this rabbit, leaving the two children alone. And then a dreadful thing happened !

Mary was walking just on the edge of the lake. Suddenly her foot slipped and over she went, right into the deep blue water !

Jack was frightened. Mary couldn’t swim, and neither could he. He couldn’t reach her, for the bank was high above the water. No one was about. What was he to do?

Mary would certainly drown if he didn’t do something! Then he suddenly thought of Lucky.

“Lucky! Lucky!” he shouted. it

Lucky came running in an instant. He saw poor Mary struggling in the water below. Splash! In he jumped and swam to her. He caught hold of her dress in his strong teeth. Then he swam back to the bank, dragging Mary after him.

He found a place where the bank was low, and Jack helped to drag Mary out.

She was gasping, but in a few minutes she was all right again. “Oh, Lucky!” she said, hugging him hard. “You have saved my life

Lucky wagged his tail with love. Then they all ran back home to Mother. Jack told Mother all that had happened.

“You rescued him when he was a puppy,” said Mother, “and now he has paid you back. Hurrah for good Lucky !”

And she gave Lucky three big chocolate biscuits as a token of thanks.
